Evaluation Of Preliminary Task

I have made my magazine so that it looks like what a real school magazine would look like. I have managed to do this by looking at different school magazines and seeing what techniques they use to make their magazine so successful. I decided that for the front page one image would work best. This would be a medium close up of students. The cover should also have the school crest on the front to identify it as being a school magazine. I discovered that this is what most school magazines look like, and so therefore I decided that my magazine would be successful like them. I had to be careful not to make my magazine look like a school prospectus rather than a magazine though, as it would not be as successful or attractive if this happened.
My magazine is for an all girls secondary school, therefore my target audience is girls aged 11-18. I have looked at the colours, activities, etc that girls at this age like and used this to help design my magazine. There are many different social groups between girls of this age, and so therefore I had to try to make my magazine appeal to all of these. To do this I used the house colours of purple and gold for all text on my front cover and contents page.
My magazine would be sold in the school. it would be a cheap magazine as it is for students, and it won’t sell if it is too expensive. I don’t think that my magazine would be sold in shops as you wouldn’t find a school magazine there.
The audience for my media product (school magazine) would be girls aged 11-18. This is because it is a magazine for an all girls secondary school.
I have attracted this audience to my magazine by using colours that I think most girls aged 11-18 would like and also using images that would relate to them. I have also used a serif text that I think is appropriate for a girls school magazine. This makes the magazine appear more elegant and personal.
By making my school magazine I have learnt some different things about the technologies that are available for me to use. I knew quite a lot already from using the programmes before. I have discovered different ways to do the text to make it more interesting and appealing. For example giving the text a background, or outlining the text with a different colour so that it is easier to read. I have also learnt how to erase parts of pictures to make them look better, and also how to make a school crest using different shapes and colours.
Looking back at my preliminary task I now have ideas on how to make my full product more successful. I could experiment with the photos I take, having different types of pictures such as close ups, long shots and medium close ups. I could also change the affects on the camera making the images black and white etc. I could also experiment with colours, making things darker/lighter and merging different colours to give different effects.
These are the pages of a school magazine that I have made for my preliminary task...

Looking at how double page spreads suit their target audience

The double page spread I have been looking at is from the well known music magazine "NME". This article has been written and designed to appeal to it's target audience of late teens to mid 30's.
The layout of this double page spread has been carefully put together to attract the attention of it's target audience. It is a very simple design, with only one image in the top left hand corner of the double page spread. This image is a medium shot of the band featured in the article, which uses direct address to catch the readers attention. By putting this image in the reader will automatically know what this article is about and will want to read on. The layout of the text in this article is also very simple. A serif font has been used for the main copy of the article and a sans-serif font has been used for the headline. The text has been split into three columns, with drop caps at the beginning of each paragraph. There are no house colours on this page, only black on white text. The drop caps and headline have a white background like the main text in the article, but they use the image behind as the colour of the text.
The mode of address that "NME" have used helps to attract it's readers to the magazine. Above i have mentioned the layout of the double page spread and the font styles used, but also "NME" have chosen to stick to their colour scheme of black on white text, however they have not used their main house colour red on this double page spread. This is unusual as it is less obvious that you are reading "NME" by just looking at this double page spread. Also "NME" has not made it obvious to the reader what band this article is about. Instead of putting the bands name as a headline they have written "Satan's little helpers'. This obviously relates to the band, but if you didn't know them well, you wouldn't know what the article was about until you started reading it. By doing this it could get the readers attention as they would be curious as to what the article is about, and so they would want to read on.
To prepare for making my magazine I looked at the brand identity of different music magazines. This is research for the brand identity of MOJO...

I have now started my preliminary task. This is to make the front cover and contents page of a school magazine. Here is some the research I have done in order to help me make my preliminary task...

Research of music magazines:
This is an analysis of the front page of Q magazine. I have looked at the way the magazine has been designed to help it appeal to it's target audience and stand out on the shelf.

I have also looked at the forms and convetions of 3 music magazines. These are NME, Q, and Kerrang...
